The Dance of Light and Shadows

Najera

Today I was super energized so I left the beautiful red rocks of Najera around 9:00 AM. Just as I was walking out of the town, I managed to snap one of my absolute favourite pictures of the entire pilgrimage. The morning sun was hitting the landscape at just the right angle, creating a stunning visual display.

Watching how the deep shadows played so beautifully in the golden lights of the morning sun made me think. In life, we are often so afraid of our “shadow sides”- our moments of sadness, exhaustion, or doubt. But the trail reminds you that you need both.

Without the darkness of the shadow, the brilliance of the morning light wouldn’t look nearly as breathtaking. It takes both to create a truly beautiful picture.

By the time I hit the open trail, the Camino was already quite busy with groups of pilgrims moving forward. The path guided us through more lush vineyards and rolling agricultural fields. If you need a morning pick-me-up boost, you can make a perfect stop in the quiet village of Azofra for a warm cup of coffee and a pastry.

Approaching Santo Domingo de la Calzada

After leaving Azofra, the scenery opened up completely, and the views became more and more gorgeous. Everywhere I looked, there were absolutely endless vibrant green fields waving in the breeze under the massive Spanish sky. It felt like walking through a living painting.

Grumpy Weather and Golden Masterpieces

Santo Domingo de la Calzada

The historic town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada met me with rather grumpy, overcast weather, but its beautiful, narrow medieval streets instantly made up for the grey skies.

Even if you are tired, you absolutely cannot skip the magnificent Catedral de Santo Domingo de la Calzada and its attached museum.

Santo Domingo de la Calzada Cathedral

🐔 Fun Camino Lore: This cathedral is world-famous for keeping a live white rooster and a hen inside a Gothic stone coop high up on the cathedral wall — commemorating one of the most legendary miracles on the entire Camino. The story goes: a young German pilgrim was falsely accused of theft by a spurned innkeeper’s daughter and hanged. His parents, devastated, visited the local magistrate to plead his innocence — only to find him mid-dinner. ‘Your son is as alive as this rooster and hen I was feasting on,’ he scoffed. At that very moment, the two roasted birds leapt from the plate, grew feathers, and began to sing. The boy was found alive on the gallows. And ever since: ‘Santo Domingo de la Calzada — where the hen sang after being roasted.’

Beyond the famous chickens, the cathedral is a treasure trove of culture. You can spend hours enjoying incredible masterworks of sacred art crafted from marble, rich wood, and shimmering gold leaf dating all the way back to the 16th century.

There was something deeply comforting about stepping out of the grumpy, chilly weather into the warm, golden glow of the cathedral. It was a physical reminder that when the outer world gets a bit gloomy and cold, it’s the perfect invitation to turn inward and seek out the warmth, beauty, and art that we keep inside ourselves.

If you really want to treat yourself well and indulge in some local luxury, Santo Domingo is home to one of Spain’s iconic historic hotels: the Parador de Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Conveniently located right next to the cathedral in a beautifully restored 12th-century pilgrim hospital, the moment you step inside its grand stone arches, it instantly wraps you in a profound feeling of history, elegance, and timeless tranquility. It is the perfect place to sit back, reflect, and rest your feet after another rewarding day on the road.

P.S. I still can’t get over this view:

P.P.S.: Next stop: the small town of Belorado. Stay tuned, pilgrims.
